WaReNam – Water Reuse Strategy for Namibia

The international research project aims to support the development of a Multi-Level Water Reuse Strategy for Namibia. The project integrates innovative technologies, adaptive multi-level governance, and capacity development approaches at various levels. The ultimate goal is to enhance Namibia’s water security by co-developing the necessary framework for the nationwide implementation of water reuse.

The WaReNam project builds on three main pillars: Technology, Governance and Capacity Development.

Living Lab Approach in WaReNam

  • Collaborative Co-Production: Involves diverse stakeholders from science, industry, and local communities.
  • Real-World Testing: Solutions are developed and tested in real-world settings, ensuring relevance and effectiveness.
  • Dynamic Adaptation: Continuous learning and adaptation to local conditions.
  • Scalability and Replication: Enables context-specific solutions to be scaled and applied in other regions.
  • Holistic Strategy: Ensures technical feasibility, social acceptance, and institutional support for sustainable water reuse.

Locations of project activities in Namibia: Outapi, Oshakati and Walvis Bay

Pilot plants are being established to test innovative water reuse technologies tailored to local conditions. The first pilot is set up for a larger municipality such as Walvis Bay with advanced wastewater treatment, aiming for water reuse for industrial purposes. The second pilot plant is set up in Oshakati, exemplarily for large towns with waste stabilization ponds. The piloting aims for testing different technology combinations (e.g., cloth media filter, trickling filter) for wastewater treatment for agricultural irrigation.

Beside technical innovation, governance structures and capacity development approaches will be developed and implemented within the project.

The project "WaReNam - Multi-Scale Water Reuse Strategy for Namibia: Technology, Governance and Capacity Building" is funded by the funding measure "Guidelines for Financing African-German Cooperation Projects in the Field of Water Security in Africa (WASA)" of the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
